Antony Lewis – Medic/HSE Advisor

Antony is a trusted and valued member of our team and is currently working a dual role as HSE Advisor/Medic on a project in the North Sea. Thankyou Antony for taking the time to speak to us to give us an insight into the HSE/Medic role!

Q: So, what exactly do you do?

Currently, I am working in a dual role as an HSE Advisor and HSE Offshore Medic for EMS- Assist’s client who are conducting a Geophysical and Environmental survey in the North Sea.

Q: What does a typical day look like?

There is no typical day and that’s what keeps things interesting.

I have a few routine tasks throughout the day such as daily meetings, safety walkarounds, and daily checks on my medical equipment etc but my day can range from conducting hygiene inspections, treating patients, and arranging MEDEVACs, assisting operations with HSE matters and providing first aid training to the crew. Today I am busy overseeing diving operations for work that is being conducted on the ship’s hull.

Q: What do you love about your job?

The thing I love about this job is that no two days are the same. I also get to travel all over the world and meet people from all different cultures and backgrounds.

Q: What are the most important attributes for the role?

  • Adaptability.
  • Resilience.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Problem-solving.
  • Questioning.
  • Empathy.
  • Ability to work independently.

Q: What do you like and dislike about working offshore?

Working offshore you tend to miss key dates such as Birthdays, Christmas, and Weddings sometimes this can be a strain on family life. I love the variety of work and locations. I have worked on Jack ups to Survey vessels onshore and offshore in a multitude of countries.

Q: Do you have any sports and hobbies outside of work?

I Like to Paddleboard, Travel, Fish, Swim, and spend quality time with my Wife and Kids

Q: Do you have any advice for anyone wanting to get into this line of work?

Working offshore is not for everyone. Do your research and start networking with people in the industry and sector you want to work in and if you think you have what it takes then go for it. I wish I had done it years earlier.

We would love to hear from any Environmental, Medical and Safety professionals who would be interested in joining our team. Please email recruitment@ems-assist.com for more information.

Thank you!
