Mental health week reminds us all of the importance of prioritising mental wellbeing. As an offshore service provider, we would like to take the opportunity to raise awareness of the specific challenges faced by offshore workers and offer some practical advice which can be utilised to support the mental well-being of those working in the industry.
Stay Connected
Being isolated from loved ones can be a big challenge faced by offshore workers. Good relationships are vitally important for your mental wellbeing, so it is important to maintain regular communication with loved ones back home. Utilise technology to stay connected through video calls, emails, or social media. Sharing experiences and concerns with family and friends can provide emotional support and alleviate feelings of isolation.
Build a Support Network
Building a support network at the worksite is crucial. Connecting with fellow workers who understand the unique challenges of offshore life can create a sense of camaraderie and belonging. Share experiences, concerns and provide mutual support. Engage in team building activities and maintain open lines of communication with co-workers.
Practice Self Care
The offshore environment can often be stressful with long working hours and demanding schedules. During down time, it is important to take time to engage in activities that bring you joy and relaxation. This could include exercise, reading, listening to music, practicing mindfulness, or pursuing hobbies.
Maintain Physical Wellbeing
Physical health is closely linked to mental wellbeing. Pay attention to your physical needs by staying hydrated, eating nutritious meals and getting regular exercise offshore. Depending on the facilities available, incorporate exercises such as walking, jogging, stretching, bodyweight exercises or using onboard gym equipment – exercise is well known to boost mood. Prioritise quality sleep to ensure that you are well rested and better equipped to handle challenges.
Establish Routine and Structure
Create a daily routine that provides structure and stability. Having a predictable schedule can help to reduce stress and provide a sense of control in the offshore environment. Make sure that your schedule includes time for leisure and personal relaxation in order to maintain a healthy work life balance.
Seek Professional Support
If you feel that you are experiencing persistent or severe mental health challenges, it is vital to speak up. Reach out to your onsite medic who can provide valuable guidance, coping strategies and can give you further advice on the support available to you.
Remember that it is always ok to ask for help. Even if you’re not sure you are experiencing a specific mental health problem.
Offshore work presents unique mental health challenges, but with practical strategies and support, workers can effectively manage their wellbeing. Your mental health matters, and taking proactive steps to support it is essential to maintain a fulfilling and balanced life both at home and away.
Thank you!
