Medical Risk Is Operational Risk

When organisations think about operational risk, the focus is often on equipment, weather, logistics, schedules and safety performance.

But there is another risk that can have a significant impact on project delivery, workforce wellbeing and business continuity: medical risk.

Medical emergencies offshore may be relatively infrequent, but their operational, financial and human consequences can be considerable. More importantly, medical risk doesn’t begin when an emergency happens. It starts much earlier through workforce health, emergency preparedness, occupational health, clinical governance and access to the right support when it’s needed.

The organisations that manage medical risk well tend to view healthcare as an integral part of project planning rather than a reactive service.

That means asking questions such as:

  • Are our emergency response arrangements appropriate for the project?
  • Do we have competent medical personnel and access to clinical support?
  • Is there a clear Medical Emergency Response Plan (MERP)?
  • Are workforce health and wellbeing being actively supported?
  • Are occupational health considerations being addressed before they become problems?

Good medical support isn’t just about responding to incidents.

It’s about preventing them where possible, identifying health concerns early, supporting the workforce, and ensuring that if an emergency does occur, people know what to do and have access to the right expertise.

In offshore and remote environments, medical support should not sit separately from operations or safety. It should form part of the wider risk management strategy, alongside HSE, training, emergency preparedness and operational planning.

Because protecting people isn’t separate from protecting projects.

The two go hand in hand.

At EMS Assist, that’s how we think about medical support: not simply as a response to emergencies, but as an important part of safe, resilient and successful operations.

Medical risk is operational risk. It deserves to be managed that way.

EMS Assist provides medical, HSE and environmental risk management services to offshore and remote industries worldwide.
